Volunteering Tips 4:

02 September 2021

Sell yourself

If organisations are going to be investing in you – sometimes with extensive training over a period of months, they need to know that it is going to be worthwhile for them.

Once you have found the opportunity that you would like to do, you may need to attend an interview or make an application before being accepted on to the role.

Use the opportunity to sell yourself – just as you would in a job interview. Tell them why you are interested in volunteering with their particular organisation, the relevant skills you have and what information you would need on order to progress your volunteering journey.

If your interests and experience do not directly relate to the volunteering role you are interested in, stop to think about skills you may have that could benefit the organisation and how they will be useful in the role.  Everyone has something unique to offer, so if you are not so good at knowing what that is, talk to friends and family and ask them to help you identify your skills.

On Simply Connect, once you are registered, if you click on an opportunity to register an interest, there will be a box on the right side of the screen which allows you to send a message to the organisation.  This is your first chance to impress them and show that you are suitable for the role - so don't be shy, make use of it.
