Spotlight on BAKO Sanctuary CIC
At the heart of every strong community is a network of people who support one another. This spirit of connection and belonging is central to the work of BAKO Sanctuary CIC, a community organisation dedicated to supporting Black African families across Bedfordshire. Founded by Hazel Muza, the organisation helps individuals and families navigate complex systems, access vital services, and overcome barriers to achieving their full potential.
Guided by the African philosophy of Ubuntu, meaning "I am because we are," BAKO believes that nobody should have to face challenges alone. Their work is built on trust, understanding, and the belief that communities thrive when people feel connected, valued, and empowered.
Supporting Families Through Challenges
Many of the families BAKO supports face multiple, overlapping challenges, including domestic abuse, immigration concerns, housing difficulties, and family welfare issues. The organisation recognises that traditional services can sometimes overlook cultural context, creating barriers to support and trust. BAKO bridges this gap by providing culturally informed guidance and advocacy.
Their services are delivered through eight key areas of support:
- Domestic violence support
- Safeguarding children
- Immigration support and navigation
- Protection from exploitation
- Employment pathways support
- Peer support and community connection
- Trauma-informed wellbeing support
- Accompaniment and advocacy at appointments
The Power of Volunteers
Volunteers play a vital role in helping BAKO achieve its mission. Whether offering practical support, facilitating community connections, or accompanying individuals to important appointments, volunteers help ensure families feel heard, understood, and supported. Their contribution makes a real difference in reducing isolation and building stronger, more resilient communities.
A Flagship Programme Making an Impact
One of BAKO's key initiatives is the Mind Your Language programme, which brings together community voices and professional services to improve understanding and outcomes. Through community listening, workforce training, and partnership working, the programme helps create stronger relationships between communities and public services.
Get Involved
There are many ways to support BAKO Sanctuary CIC. Individuals can volunteer their time and skills, professionals can refer families who may benefit from support, and organisations can explore partnership opportunities to strengthen community services across Bedfordshire.
By working together, we can help create a community where every family feels supported, respected, and empowered to move forward with confidence.
