Inside every prison, immigration removal centre and some short term holding facilities at airports and docks, there is an Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) – a group of ordinary members of the public doing an extraordinary job. IMB members are independent, unpaid and work an average of 2-3 visits per month.. Members have unrestricted access to their local prison or immigration detention centre at any time and can talk to any prisoner person they wish to, out of sight and hearing of a members of staff if necessary HMP Bedford is a reception prison that serves the local courts and has around 400 prisoners at any time, although with a high turnover there may be 2,500 prisoners going through the prison during a year. The monitoring board comprises up to 12 members and there are currently some vacancies. We would welcome new members to a role that is incredibly worthwhile and fulfilling.
